Hello! My husband and I will be celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary in December at a reception given by our children and grandchildren. I would like to wear a floor-length dress which I have already worn for the formal night on a cruise, and I would like for my husband to rent a tuxedo for this occasion. Would this be appropriate attire for an afternoon reception? Thank you!

Hi Freida. Congratulations on your upcoming 50th wedding anniversary. Daytime events are classified as semi-formal or black tie events, although you could go less casual if you want to. Renting a tuxedo would be appropriate in this case. Women’s clothing is less specific for black tie affairs, and they can wear short or long dresses.
