What Is The Appropriate Attire For An Afternoon Wedding Anniversary Party? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Freida:

Hello!  My husband and I will be celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary in December at a reception given by our children and grandchildren.  I would like to wear a floor-length dress which I have already worn for the formal night on a cruise, and I would like for my husband to rent a tuxedo for this occasion.  Would this be appropriate attire for an afternoon reception?   Thank you!

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Freida.  Congratulations on your upcoming 50th wedding anniversary.  Daytime events are classified as semi-formal or black tie events, although you could go less casual if you want to.  Renting a tuxedo would be appropriate in this case.  Women’s clothing is less specific for black tie affairs, and they can wear short or long dresses.  Check out this previous blog answer for more detail on formal, semi-formal and casual dress.
