How Do I Keep A Nautical Wedding Theme From Becoming Too Casual? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Kathy:

I would like a formal feel to my wedding reception however would like to incorporate our love for sailing.  Nautical themes seem casual.  Any ideas on formalizing a sailing theme?  Table decorations?

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Kathy, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  The secret to keeping things more formal is to not over-do a theme.  A few items strategically placed will go a long way toward keeping your reception formal.  If you are having a catered affair, you might choose a "sailing" ice sculpture, lit from behind and sparkling in the entrance to your reception.

The water activated diamond light at the base of each table vase accents water in a subtle way.  If you go to the home page and look under SHOP FOR there are a number of items that you will find that would create a sailing theme.  The "beach items" are more casual than, for example, Scattered Pearls & Crystal Collection or the Seaside Allure Collection.  Check out this article on Nautical Weddings.  I would also check out the blog on "beach themes" even though that can be casual.  You will get some great ideas from the articles and Ask The Expert Answers.

The real trick between casual and formal, is to keep your theme understated, and your sailing items strategically placed for maximum effect.  For example, something at the reception entrance table or the entrance itself.  Something subtle and elegant on the guests tables—floating candles in a vase for example.  The headtable can also have something to reflect your love of the outdoor, the sea, and sailing. Use your imagination, and by following the SHOP FOR links, you will get many ideas.  And don’t forget colour!  Colour goes a long way to accent a theme in a subtle way.
