If The Parents Pay For The Wedding Reception, Do They Also Buy A Gift For The Couple? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Paula:

Hello – my question is:  if my husband and I are paying for the food at my daughters wedding ($10,000) are we still required to give the couple a gift?

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Paula, and congratulations on your daughter’s upcoming wedding.  It is not traditional that if the parents are paying for the reception that they also give a gift.  Saying that, in my role as a minister, I have seen some parents also give a gift to the bride and groom.  If you choose to follow this more modern trend, the gift need not be expensive or lavish. Gifts should be given from the heart, and tempered by the pocketbook.
