Question from Rachel:
We are looking in to doing the unity sand at our wedding, I have heard that you need to seal it, so it doesn’t spill or change. How do you go about sealling it?
Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:
Hi Rachel and congratulations on your upcoming marriage. The Unity Candle Ceremony is a beautiful symbolic representation of the joining of two people. I have not seen people seal their sand, but that does not mean it can’t be done.
Most large craft stores or art supply stores sell a clear casting product that comes under different names. You mix a resin and a hardener together (looks like clear water) and when you put it in a container it hardens and looks like water. What you are actually doing is sealing the top of the container so the sand is sealed in. You aren’t actually sealing the sand in its position—you are just sealing it so that the sand can’t move around easily. The more common ones are Castin’ Craft’s Polyester Casting Resin, or Easy Cast’s Clear Casting Epoxy.
I would caution you that when you pour the casting product into the container that, like water, it will have an impact on the sand and move it around. So pouring will have to be done slowly and carefully to preserve your unity candle in it’s original state.
Ask at your local craft shop or local art supply store and they will give you more details about the products they have available, and how they work.
