How Do I Tell Wedding Guests What to Wear? Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Valerie:

We are getting married at my fiance’s family’s church and having an outdoor reception.  It’s a summer wedding but I want my guests to be comfortable yet tastefully dressed for the church ceremony.  How can I include this note along with invitations without anyone being embarrassed?

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Valerie and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  I would not bother with any note in regards to how guests should dress—it is poor etiquette.  People understand that church attire needs to be modest.  Having an outdoor reception automatically denotes informal attire, but people know it is a wedding and will dress appropriately.  This article on wedding attire might give you more information.

Usually invitations will state formal attire, because people do not normally dress formally.  Most people dress informally for most social occasions (suit and tie, dresses) which is acceptable for church.
