How Do I Find A Less Expensive Reception Hall? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Jacqueline:

Hi.  I’m getting married in May 2010.  We have almost everything planned out—theme, favors, wedding dress, etc.   We also have the place for my wedding.  I’m just having second thoughts if I really want to spend a lot of money for a wedding hall.  My fiancee thinks I’m overreacting and we should do it.  The way the situation is right now, I want to find a smaller and less expensive reception hall.  Do you think I’m overreacting?

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Jacqueline, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  How nice that you have so much decided so early in the planning process!  You have no idea how much pleasanter your wedding process will be because of it.

The reception is the most expensive part of a wedding and averages 42% of the overall wedding budget.  Between the "hall" and the catering, it is the biggest expense you will have, so it is understandable to be nervous about spending that much money on one thing.   To keep it in perspective, think about your overall budget and remember 40% – 45% is for the reception.

There are ways to create a beautiful wedding without spending so much on the reception.  Check out this article to get  ideas for wedding receptions and how to assess the reception site.  For further ideas on wedding reception sites this link will show you options that other couples have chosen.

If you are looking for a less expensive option, civic sites are less expensive than grand hotels.  Often you can find a beautiful room in a city building, say in a park or other location, that you can rent for your wedding reception site.  If you rent a site (whether civic or commercial) and bring in your own caterer, it can be much cheaper.

I suggest you investigate a few options, and price them out.  If you compare services and cost, you will feel much better about making a decision to spend the money required for your reception.  If you have more knowledge about your choices, you will feel better about  making your decision.
