Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Michelle, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  You only have 8 months to your wedding day, so my first suggestion is to move forward quickly because there are a lot more details than most people realize when they start planning their wedding.  Most people take a year or more to plan their wedding, but take heart—if you keep to your to do list, make decisions and move on to the next thing, you will make it.  Remember that there are traditional duties for bride, groom, bridal party members, and family.  You don’t have to do it all yourself, but you do need to coordinate it.

As for your wedding theme, I suggest you visit the homepage of  My Dream Wedding, and scroll down the page.  On your right you will see a list of categories, including a large list of wedding themes.  Clicking on the links will take you to information about the various themes.  I also suggest you take a look at wedding favours to see what you like.  Finding a really nice wedding favour can inspire a theme for you, and you will already have the wedding favour to reinforce that theme.

Another suggestion is to search through these wedding supplies for your ceremony and reception.  Here you will get ideas on how to decorate to help create your theme.  When you choose your wedding invitations, you can again continue your theme.

Usually a couple will choose a wedding theme based on their personality.  Do you and your fiance have hobbies or special interests?  That can be your theme.  Sometimes, couple’s choose to make a simple statement with a colour theme.  Colour can be playful, elegant, casual, sophisticated, and more.  For example, a black and white theme is sophisticated.  Because they are neutral colours, any splash of bold colour (think red) would be a great accent with black and white.

If you were going for a fairytale theme, you would want  soft pastel colours, and a wedding gown that has a crinoline supported skirt (think a Cinderella skirt).  Elegant themes tend to have neutral colours in the brown tones (with or without colour accents) and with a gown that is more form fitting.   Looking through bridal magazine or searching on-line will give you many more ideas, as the possibilites are truly endless.   Choose something and move on.  You have a lot to do in 8 months.
