How Do I Plan My Wedding? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Pollyanna:

Hi Angela.  My and my husband got married 2 year’s ago.  We really rushed on the marriage and none of my family came— only his mom and sister.  My family didn’t like him at the time, but now they love him.  The pastor from our church presented us.   Now, after having our first child, I know what I did wasn’t cool of me, but I had to do it at time because I am a very religious girl.  I have it in my head to do it again.  What I want to do is have a simple wedding / reception just to have pictures and family together.  I have no idea how to plan it , choose colours and everything.  Can you give me some advice please?

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Pollyanna.  My first piece of advice is to find a really good wedding planning checklist.  Most bridal magazines have wedding planning checklists in them, and you can also do a google search for  "wedding planning checklist".  There are many available for free online.

You can have your wedding/reception at any time, but I suggest that you plan to have it close to your wedding anniversary date, and have a renewal of wedding vows.  The pastor from your church will guide you through the renewal of vows ceremony.

Then you can plan your reception or party.  It can be as simple as a home party, or as elaborate as a grand hotel.  A lot of what you decide will depend upon your budget.  In 2008, the average wedding in Canada cost $18,000.  You have some decisions to make.  Do you want a full wedding with wedding gown, bridesmaids, etc.?  Do you want a reception with a full sit down dinner, wedding favours at each plate, and a decorated reception room?  or do you want a buffet lunch or cocktail reception?  Your choices are many, and you can choose anything you want.  There is no right or wrong way to celebrate your marriage.

This information should get you started.  If you have further questions, just fill out the box below, and I will respond.  Good luck and have fun!
