What Timing Should I Plan For My Wedding Ceremony & Reception? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Kim:

Hi, my wedding is in May; wedding ceremony is at 3:00 PM.  I’m guessing that people will be late?

I had originally planned a group picture from 3:30 – 4:00 and then our pictures from 4:00 – 5:00 (guests seated at 5:00) and then buffet dinner at 5:30 PM; but my sister-in-law feels that’s rushing things.  We have a fab DJ booked until midnight.

The wedding and reception are in the same place at the hall.  It is located around an old fort so there will be things for the guests to do while we’re doing pictures and the catering staff are setting up.

So, how do I time this?  I guess I’m rushing things because I don’t want my guests to be bored; however I don’t want them to feel like they have to start dancing at 8:00 PM either.   Help.  Thanks so much

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

I agree with your sister-in-law.  Everything takes longer than you expect at a wedding.  I think your group picture will take longer than 30 minutes.  Getting people together, getting the right pictures, and allowing time for guests to take pictures also will take time.  An hour for your wedding photos should be long enough, but check with your photographer.  He/She will know how long it will take for the photo package that you ordered.

As for your guests being seated at 5 pm, well it will take at least half an hour for people to take their seats.  They will see people they haven’t seen in some time, and people will be visiting and talking.  Allowing an hour for people to arrive, find seats, visit a bit, and get settled is typical at weddings.

No one really watches the time at a wedding, so just go with the flow.  Guests will be relaxed and visiting.  Speak to your caterer about the timing.  They know what timeline they need to setup and be ready.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions, feel free to email again.
