How Do I Pick A Wedding Theme? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Michelle:

We have been trying to plan our perfect wedding…but he is sooo Italian and I am not.  (This also reflects on our families and what they expect.) I am trying to come up with ideas to find a perfect between theme to the expectations and food.  My family is simple, his is not.  I need to find a way to make both familes happy during our happy day. I need advice.

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Michelle, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  I have a lot of questions to ask before I can give you any advice.  My suggestion is that you and your fiance sit down together and share what each of you thinks your wedding should be like.  Write it down.  What does he expect?  What do you expect?

Once you have that done, determine your budget.  It’s great to have big plans for a wedding, but it costs money.  Where will the money come from?  If his family is adamant about something extravagant that you can’t afford, it is pointless to plan for it, or argue about it.  Or maybe, if they knew it wasn’t in the budget, they might want to pay for it if it is important to them.

Think of this as a trial run for your future life together.  You will probably come across many traditions that are different, and how you handle it now will set the tone for your future together.  If you still need advice, consider hiring a wedding consultant for a few hours to help you get everything resolved.

If you are looking for ideas on the wedding theme, check out this link that shows you thousands of wedding favours.  Look through them for ideas of what you would like to do for a wedding theme.  The best wedding theme would be something that you share together—like movies, or chocolate or whatever you interests are.

Your wedding is not about pleasing your family or his family.  Your wedding is an expression of the two of you and should reflect who you are as a couple—not your families.
