How Can I Use Sex and The City As A Wedding Theme? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Heather:

Hi,  I recently had the idea to have the Sex and the City as our wedding theme since I am a big fan of the show, I love designer purses and shoes and it fits my personality well.  So I had the idea to use shoe candles, and purses for candy favors, city skyline confetti, and city style invitations.  I want my wedding to be elegant, sophisticated, and mature. My wedding colors will be red, white and black ( I am not wanting to change my colors, and I think I can still make the colors work ok with my theme idea.) I will be 30 years old by the time our event is.  I am a lil hesitated with my wedding theme idea cuz I definately DONT want our wedding to see like a prom party.  Help !  Is my Sex and the City wedding theme a good idea afterall?  I would not be able to use my favorite theme for anything else since I don’t plan on having a bridal or bachelorette party.

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Heather, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  I read your email with interest, but no where have you mentioned your fiance.  A wedding is supposed to be about you as a couple—not one person’s ideas.  A wedding theme should be a reflection of "you" as a couple—what things do you have in common, what things drew you together?  That would be an appropriate theme.  This video I made on How To Choose A Wedding Theme will give you some ideas.

I, personally, have never watched Sex and the City, so your references to all the girly things you mentioned would just appear girly to me.  What is the average age of your guests?  Do you think they watch Sex and the City?  Would they ‘get’ the reference?

And what about your fiance.  He is the second half of the wedding theme!  Where does he fit in?  You say you want your wedding to be elegant, sophisticated, and mature.  Your black, white and red colour scheme is a great start to that.  I don’t think you need to abandon ALL your Sex and the City ideas, but really, purses and shoes are not so elegant or sophisticated for a wedding, but much more appropriate for a bridal shower or bachlorette party.

Your ‘city skyline’ confetti sounds nice, and "city" wedding invitations can work also.  Now you need to add to it with some nice jazz music—maybe a trio or quartet during the cocktail hour, or you might opt for classical music instead.  If you look at bridal magazines, you will find that the most sophisticated and elegant decor involves flowers, and the centrepieces.  So, I would recommend you concentrate on those things to bring your look to life.  Wedding favours are a great way to show your guests ‘you’ as a couple.  I recommend this site for wedding favours—they have a HUGE selection.

Good luck on your upcoming wedding.
