Question from Karen:
My niece is getting married – the invitation states a formal reception following the wedding, does this mean a long gown for me and a tux for my husband or just a nice dress and suit?
Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:
Hi Karen. Formal dress can be white tie (very formal) or black tie (semi-formal) and is usually specified. Daytime events are often semi-formal (black tie) when it comes to the formal attire category. For women that means backless dresses, cocktail dresses, evening gowns and ball gowns. For men it means a black suit and white shirt (and black tie).
Saying that, because our North American society is so casual, people often refer to ‘formal attire’ when they expect people to wear a suit or a dress. Because the invitation does not state white tie or black tie (the two types of formal), I assume they are expecting suits and dresses. (Interestingly enough this is technically called informal attire). If you have any doubt, contact whomever is listed as hosting the wedding on the invitation and ask them.
