Wedding Traditions You Might Want To Try

I love learning about different cultures since I met Levi. He is Jewish and I am Christian and there are a lot of differences in rituals and traditions, but also a lot of similarities in beliefs. Since I am planning a Jewish/Christian wedding, I have to be sensitive to both sides of the family in terms of wedding traditions.

While researching about ways to combine the Jewish wedding tradition and the Christian wedding tradition, I became curious of how other countries and religions perform their weddings.

What I found, is that the French came up with the tradition of “toasting” the bride and groom which can be found in modern Western weddings. In French weddings, the parents of the bride and groom would literally put a piece of toast into the newlyweds wine or Champagne to symbolize a healthy and full life. The couple would then raise their glasses and drink. Today, a typical Western wedding doesn’t put toast into the cups, but the participants and their guests raise their glasses as to congratulate the couple and wish them a wonderful life.

Another French tradition that I really liked a lot is that when the bride enters the place where she is going to have her wedding, she has to pass through white ribbons held above the walkway by children. When the bride gets to each of the ribbons, she cuts them and is allowed to go through. This signifies her entering a new threshold in her life.

One ancient Celtic tradition that is used today in some weddings is Handfasting. This is when the bride and groom hands are tied in a scarf during the ceremony to symbolize the bond they have forever. This tradition is where the saying “tying the knot” came from.

I think it’s great to look up different wedding traditions from either your heritage or you fiancé’s heritage and decide if you want to make those special traditions apart of your wedding. Remember, you wedding is not only about the bond between you and your new husband, but it is also the bond between generations to come and generations before you.
