Brantford is a city located towards the south-west of Ontario, Canada with the Grand River wrapping around it running from its north-west corner all the way down to the bottom and ending at the south-east end of the town. It is nestled between Woodstock, which is to its west and Hamilton, which is to its east while Cambridge lies just to its north and Simcoe to its south. It once came under Brant County’s municipality. Besides that, Brantford is also fondly known as ‘The Telephone City’ after one of the town most renowned former resident, Alexander Graham Bell –– thanks to him we can communicate easily with each across the continents today.

The history of Brantford all started with Captain Joseph Brant and six Nations Indians who left New York to settle in Canada. They were given a huge piece of land on the Grand River as a reward for their loyalty to the Crown. The original name to the area –– Brant’s Ford –– was a result of Brant’s crossing the river. By 1847, European settlers have settled further up the Grand River and named the village Brantford which is still the very name borne by the place at present. The place was only officially incorporated as a city in 1877 on May 31.
Brantford played a crucial role as an important Canadian industrial hub for the first half of the twentieth century. It was once the third largest city in Ontario as well as the railway hub of Southern Ontario. However, the economy of the city declined in the 1980s and 1990s due to the bankruptcies of quite a number of manufacturers in the area that led to thousands of retrenched workers. Nonetheless, the unemployment rate has improved steadily since then. It was even added to the Greater Golden Horseshoe (a term meaning “places to grow”) on February16, 2005.
Today, the population of Brantford stands just slightly under 100,000 at approximately 90,192 as of 2006 Canada census with Mike Hancock as the current city mayor and two councilors each to represent each of the five wards. The education of the people is served by a number of schools and colleges and there is even a school for the blind and deaf-blind there. On the other hand, many forms of entertainment are available in the city to amuse both its own citizens and visitors alike. Some of the places of attractions that are worth visiting are Bell Homestead (the home of telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell), Ben Mar Family Fun Centre, Brant Conservation Area, Brantford Charity Casino as well as the Brantford Museum and Archives.
