Brighton is a town in the Northumberland County of Ontario, Canada and is located more or less 150 kilometers east of Toronto, the province’s capital city and approximately 100 kilometers west of Kingston. It is primarily an agricultural community that depends solely on its produce, in particular apples such as the specialization of apples farming and the production of new apple types. Due to this cause, it is the host to Applefest, which is held in late September and is the largest annual festival of the community.
As did the most of Ontario, the area of Brighton began as a wild and wooded region that is best travelled by water. Its first known settler –– a gentlemen by the name if Obediah Simpson –– arrived in 1796. Nineteen official families together with a number of unregistered settlers have already put themselves up in this area by 1831. Twenty years later, the population has reached five hundred people and ten mills. This small town achieved its peak in population and prosperity between 1830 and 1875 as is similar to other small towns in the nearby area. Each family had their own distinctiveness and their own importance to the community. It was only just recently that Brighton celebrated the bicentennial anniversary of its first settlement two hundred years ago.

There are about 9,500 inhabitants that come under the Municipality of Brighton which was formerly known as Brighton Township and the Town of Brighton. Although the community is small, it has a higher than average percentage of those retired. This is nothing out of the norm as the quiet, clean, friendly and tranquil atmosphere surrounding the small town has a tendency to attract the elderly as an ideal place for their retirement living. Its closeness to nature away from the hassle and bustle of a busy city gives retirees and visitors and relaxing feeling.
Brighton is also known as a summer resort town and is the official gateway to Presqu’ile Provincial Park. Presqu’ile is a French word that means ‘almost an island’. This small town open its arms to thousand of visitors to Presqu’ile each summer who spend their vacations there camping, bird watching, going for long hikes through the protected wilderness, walking leisurely along the harbor side boardwalks or just simply lying around lazing away their time on the long stretch of sandy beach of Lake Ontario with water lapping at their toes. Surrounded by a number of farms, Brighton’s agricultural past and present can be seen everywhere, notably during its annual Applefest. A visit to the Proctor House Museum will undoubtedly allow one the glimpse of a powerful Brighton family’s life whose business interests played a crucial role in the town for more than a century while Memory Junction Museum will give visitor a glance of its railway heritage.
