White Weddings ? The Norm and Still the Best

“Married in white, you will have chosen all right. Married in grey, you will go far away. Married in black, you will wish yourself back. Married in red, you’ll wish yourself dead. Married in blue, you will always be true. Married in pearl, you’ll live in a whirl. Married in green, ashamed to be seen, Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow. Married in brown, you’ll live out of town. Married in pink, your spirits will sink.”

White. The color of purity. No wonder this is the basic shade of color for weddings. In fact, white wedding is a theme and is often coined to represent a traditional formal or semi-formal western wedding. In actual fact, white weddings refer to the color of the wedding gown. Before wedding gowns became a social obligation for bride to wear, ladies often wear their best dress to be wed. Or so, they would purchase a specially made dress that can be worn later for other events. This was the norm for United Kingdom in the mid-twentieth century. American women were conformed to it in the pre twentieth century.

White weddings have become the standard wedding theme in our world today. The bride would always be wed in a beautiful white wedding gown with a veil covering her face. Most garden weddings have white tables, chairs and tents to match the theme. Even the tablecloths and plates are ensured to be white and spotless. However, the focus would always be revered to the prettiest one of all, the bride. From top to bottom, she would be clad in the same color. A vision of pure white, as they call it. Wedding veils. Wedding garters. Wedding socks. And of course, the wedding shoes. However, a lot of people abandon a little aspect when it comes to the wedding attire.

The white handkerchief has always been used as a form of surrender. A symbol of complete submission. The white handkerchief is also used to convey a feeling of deep emotion, both positive and deep admiration for something that they respect. It has long been a tradition for brides to carry white handkerchief on their wedding day. It is a sign of giving up her home, her family and joining another man to build her own home and family. When they wave the handkerchief while looking into the groom’s eye, it shows that she is so madly in love with him and would surrender the thing that she loved most in order to be with him. However, the inclusion of a white wedding handkerchief as a part of the wedding attire is not as popular as it was.

Nonetheless, it has taken a new form and use. White wedding handkerchiefs are actually distributed as wedding favours among the guests. Not only is it cost effective, it also gives you the choice of personalizing it. The blank face on it offers you the option of stitching heartfelt message. Instead of just putting the names of the newly wedded couple, a personal note of thanks would be appropriate too. Better yet, why don’t you include a poem to let out your creative side? You may make separate batches of white wedding handkerchiefs. The more personal ones would be for your family and close friends while the other would be for the general guests. I can pretty guarantee that they would be very touched.
