Question from Kim:
My fiance and I love Halloween and want to have that be our theme. However, I am running into a couple of dilemmas
1) My uncle’s favorite holiday was Halloween and something really bad happened around this time and I would not want to offend his children (my cousins) by having a Halloween themed wedding
2) My grandmother is very religious and does not like halloween.
What should we do?
Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:
Hi Kim,
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.
You state that you love a Halloween theme but don’t want to offend family by using this theme. Some provinces have a thing called a wedding social. This is a social evening with music and dancing, with alcohol being served. Tickets are sold (usually around $12 each) and people purchase their drinks. The money raised is used by the couple to help cover the cost of the wedding.
A wedding social is an excellent opportunity to indulge in your Halloween theme without offending family by having a Halloween theme at your wedding. You could actually hold this event as a costume affair on a weekend near Oct 31. It would allow you to indulge your Halloween theme, and make some money to go towards the wedding.
At a wedding social, it is traditional to have the bridal party there, with a "first dance" song by the couple, and then the bridal party joins in for the "second dance". The main point of a wedding social is to dance, drink and party—with the proceeds of the evening (ticket sales and liquor sales) going to the couple to help wedding costs.
In some provinces, it is common to have an Engagement Party. This could also be an opportunity to use the Halloween theme without offending family by using it at your wedding.
Good luck with your wedding plans.
