Hi Preema, and congratulations on your upcoming marriage. The most classic jewellery for a wedding is pearls, followed by silver. The more modern use of crystal allows for variety in your wedding jewellery, and crystals comes in many different colours, so you can carry a theme colour into your jewellery for a modern look.

There are many choices that you have, depending upon the bodice of your dress. If your wedding gown bodice is detailed, I would suggest a simple pearl strand. If your gown is of a more simple style, you can go with a more detailed and full necklace. You want the length of the necklace to sit comfortably between your neck and the top of the wedding gown. Earrings and a tiara or bridal headpiece can accent your look, and give the illusion of more height. If you have a full neck height wedding dress, then I would suggest earrings and a tiara.

You say you have long hair. This lets you play with many different styles. I suggest you try different "up-do’s" to see what you like the best. Take pictures of yourself with these hairstyles to see what they look like. Although it is great to have a spectacular hair style, when you look back at your pictures, you want to see what you looked like in those years, so a style that is close to your regular look is most often recommended. I suggest you ask a friend who is good with hair to come over one day and help you experiment with different looks. Or, if you have a favourite hairdresser, you can visit him/her and see what they will recommend.

It is always good to try a hairstyle out before the wedding to see if it is what you truly want. If you are having a headpiece and veil, you might find that the hairstyle is really not that important because it is mostly covered up. I suggest you try different hairstyles with your jewellery, headpiece and veil, because it will be a whole look.

Jewelry tastes are as different from one couple to another. Some prefer a more traditional cut to their jewelry, others prefer something a little more elaborate while a select few would go to great lengths (and pay good money) to create something uniquely personal. No matter what the taste and type, jewelry plays a role very much like the wedding gown – it is used to enhance and reflect the personality of the bride and groom, and is very much a personal choice.

When referring to jewelry, we begin with the ones no wedding day would be complete without – the wedding bands. Unlike the days of old where gold was practically the only option as the mineral for these symbols of unending love, today, you have your choice of yellow gold, white gold, sterling silver or platinum, amongst the more popular choices. And then there would be your choice of plain, decorated or stoned.

Plain wedding bands are still very much the choice for couples today. With only the optional engraving on the inside of the ring, you can have your choice of either yellow or white gold, sterling silver or platinum for these. Wedding rings that are decorated do not have any precious stones set on them but have been shaped, molded or designed with the same mineral with which the band is made up of. The groom is not exempted from wearing jewelry on his wedding day as well. Wedding jewelry is an essential part of a bride’s look on that most important day when she must take the stage as the queen for a day. The rule of thumb for a bride’s jewelry, along with her other bridal accessories should reflect the stage of formality of the wedding celebration. An informal ceremony calls for simple adornments, while large formal weddings calls for more elaborate adornments.

There are various aspects to consider when selecting wedding accessories. The style of the bridal gown plays a major role in the selection of jewels. Strapless or low necklines are best for showcasing of necklaces and earrings. On the other hand when using a gown with high neckline it may be better not to use a necklace and simply concentrate on finding the perfect earrings. Generally speaking with a more ornate wedding gown one should wear simpler ornaments but with a simpler gown one is able to wear much more complex pieces.

This is to avoid looking too excessive to the point of being gaudy.

All bridesmaids’ ensemble should be coordinated, that is keeping to the same colour and style regardless of whether they match or contrast with the colour of the dress. It is recommended that the bridal party ornaments be kept simple yet elegant.

Pearls have been worn for centuries as a symbol of purity and perfection. In ancient Roman culture, the pearl was the ultimate symbol of wealth and social standing, while the ancient Greeks associated pearls with love, marriage, and unrivaled beauty and believed them to possess powers to harmonize a wedded reunion. Modern brides often wear a wide array or precious and semi precious stones including rhinestones, diamonds, cubic zirconium, gemstones (ruby, opal, jade etc) and or a combination in their wedding ornaments. This all depends on budget and personal preferences.

The pearl, which is considered to be the birthstone for June, has been used not only in jewelry, but also stitched onto clothing, crushed and used in cosmetics, medicines, or in paint formulations. Historically, it was the exclusive possessions of royalty and aristocracy. Let’s learn a little more about pearls.

It is the oldest known gem known to mankind and is valued in many cultures throughout history. As far back as 2300 BC, Chinese records indicate that pearls were prized possessions of royalty. Ancient Hindu texts state that the god Krishna discovered the first pearl. In ancient Egypt, mother-of-pearl was used for decorative purposes as far back as 4000 BC. The ancient Greeks used them especially at weddings, believing that pearls are said to bring love, while in the Koran, the pearl is described as one of the greatest treasures provided in Paradise.

Kokichi Mikimoto was instrumental in perfecting the technique for artificially stimulating the development of round pearls in Akoya oysters, thus giving rise to the term cultured pearls.

Faux or real

Bear in mind that cultured pearls are not the same as imitation pearls. These pearls are manufactured, so they have no real value as a gemstone. They can be made from glass, ceramic, shell or even plastic. The bead is then coated with varnish to produce a pearl-like luster and iridescence.

To test if a pearl is real or faux, scrape it gently across your teeth. Imitation pearls feel smooth to the tooth while the genuine ones feel slightly gritty or abrasive due to the crystalline structure of the nacre.

Now that you know how to tell the real from the faux, you can start shopping for your pearl bridal jewelry. There are various types of pearls – Akoya, freshwater, Black Tahitian and South Sea. Akoya pearls exhibit the traditional white, silver or cream colors, while Tahitians and South Sea pearls give darker tones. Freshwater can be either white or dark.

The value of the pearls in wedding jewelry is determined by a combination of the luster (which is the most important), color, size, lack of surface flaw and symmetry. The larger the pearl, the more valuable it is although large, perfectly round pearls are rare and highly valued while teardrop-shaped pearls are often used in pendants.

Matinee or opera

Did you know that pearls have their own set of names that characterize the pearls based on where they hang when worn around the neck? A collar will sit directly against the throat often made up of multiple strands of pearls. Pearl chokers nestle just at the base of the neck. A princess comes down to or just below the collarbone while a matinee falls just above the breasts. An opera will be long enough to reach the breastbone of the wearer, and longer still, a pearl rope is any length that falls down farther than an opera.

However, don’t muddle up your pretty little head with all these terms. You have enough on your hands to worry about. To accessorize a wedding gown, strapless or otherwise, you can safely wear either a collar, choker or a princess, and find its matching earrings. However, use a collar only if you are endowed with a swan-like neck. You can also add a lovely matching pearl bracelet to complete the ensemble.

You can choose a necklace whose pearl size is the same throughout or they can be graduated, with a larger pearl in the center and smaller pearls on each side of the clasp.

It has now become the practice among parents of the bride or groom to give a gift of pearls to the bride. Many bridesmaids are also given pearl necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

Now here’s some interesting information about the size of pearls in a necklace. Tradition dictates that certain pearl sizes are deemed suitable for women of certain age groups and the size of the pearls is an indicator of the wearer’s wealth and social status.

Pearls ranging between 5.5 and 6.5 mm are generally for teenage girls and younger women up to the mid-20s. Those which are between 6.5 and 8.0 mm are worn by women in their mid-20s to mid-30s. Pearls 8.0-9.0 mm in size are traditionally worn by women in their mid-30s to mid-40s, exhibiting an aura of status, class, and success. Pearls measuring 9.0-10.0 mm are generally worn by wealthy matured women.

Lastly, a short note on how to take care of your pearl jewelry. Do apply perfume, hair spray, and other cosmetics before putting on your pearls. After each use, wipe them with a soft damp cloth to remove any traces of cosmetic products or body oils. Wash the pearls occasionally with a mild soap and a soft cloth. Keep your pearls separately to prevent scratches. If possible, store them wrapped in soft cloth or pouch, or jewelry box.
