Cobourg is a town with a population of 18,210 residents. The town is situated some110 kilometers east of Toronto in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is the largest town in and the area and is located along Highway 401 (exits 472 and 474) and County Road 2. Cobourg borders Lake Ontario and is surrounded by the Hamilton Township.
Cobourg was founded in 1798. Some of the founding fathers and early settlers were Eluid Nickerson, Joseph Ash, Zacheus Burnham and Asa Burnham. The Town was in fact a group of smaller villages such as Amherst and Hardscrabble, which were later named Hamilton. The name Cobourg replaced the name of Hamilton in 1818 as part of the recognition of the marriage of Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg the then soon to be monarch of Belgium.
In the mid 1800’s Cobourg was the regional centre and the district town for the Newcastle District, this was mainly thanks to the great Cobourg harbor on Lake Ontario. Smack dab in the middle of downtown is Victoria Hall, a magnificent historical building that is the current town hall, it also houses the Art Gallery of Northumberland, the Cobourg Concert Hall, and an Old Bailey-style courtroom. Kivas Tully was the architect responsible for the Victoria Hall. The building is renowned for its intricate stone work and fine stone carvings. The building was opened in 1860 by the Prince of Wales, later to become Edward VII of the United Kingdom, King Edward VII. During that time, Cobourg was a major town in the Province of Canada, so much so that a number felt that Cobourg would be a suitable capital for the newly formed Canada; the capital went to Ottawa, Ontario, however.

During the 19th century and early 20th century extremely rich Americans made some enormous summer homes there, a lot of these monstrous mansions still stand today as part of Cobourg’s heritage. For almost a decade from the late 80s to the 90s the town spent heavily on purchasing property along the waterfront and beautifying the area. The harbor and beach are now joined thanks to a boardwalk and pathways that stretch through Victoria Park and into the downtown. The Cobourg Waterfront Festival is an annual event held in conjunction with the beautification of the waterfront. During this festival arts and crafts are displayed. The first festival was held in 1987 as a part of the town’s sesquicentennial celebrations, and was conceived by the Art Gallery of Northumberland’s former Director/Curator Peter Tulumello and former Concert Hall Manager Mark Finnan.
Despite all the developments Cobourg still retains its rustic small town charm, this in part due to the fact that it has the status as a Heritage Conservation District. Cobourg’s downtown is good example of a traditional small-town main street. So come visit Cobourg for a taste of the simple life.
