Wedding supplies in Carp, Ontario, Canada

When you say carp most people would think of fish after all carp is a type of fish. The fact is, Carp is also the name of a village located in west of urban Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The village is quite well known for the Diefenbunker, a Cold War museum that is located in the village, and it was featured prominently in The Sum of All Fears a film adaptation of the novel by the same name. The name of the village comes from the Carp River which runs through the village and not from the fish. The main street of the village was formerly a section of the Trans-Canada Highway, historically the highway was used to ferry many of the vehicles coming from the west into Ottawa. However in modern times the village has now been bypassed with the completion and use of Highway 417.

Thanks to the joining of municipal governments in the region in 2001, Carp is now governed as part of the new city of Ottawa. The area of Carp has been expanded widely and Carp is now used as a mailing address for large areas mainly of the former West Carleton Township. This has given rise to a small predicament as the fact that some residents of this large area are forced to put themselves as living in Carp although they are in fact living a great distance from the village proper.

One of the most widely known attractions in Carp is a large farmers’ market that is held in Carp each Saturday from May to October. Part of the celebrations for harvesting there is a large annual fair that has been held annually for over a hundred years. The Carp Fair is carried out in September; the first fair was held in 1880. The fair is held at the fairgrounds, a specially designated area especially used for this purpose. The fair attracts people from all over the city every year and also many tourists from elsewhere but mainly the neighboring United States of America.

Although a considerably small village there are three schools in Carp at large: Huntley Centennial Public School, St. Michael’s and Venta, a private school. This shows the emphasis on education for all students there.

So if you happen to be passing by on Highway 417 and notice a signboard indicating a town with the funny name of a fish why not stop there awhile. You might be surprised with what you find there and may come back for more. Alternatively after reading this article you could organize a planned trip there to coincide with the attractions such as the annual fair to further enhance your visit there. So why not give Carp a chance, you won’t be disappointed.
