Have you ever heard of the Live 8 concert that was held on the 2nd July 2005? If not, first give yourself a slap or a punch as that was like the biggest concert ever held in the world! How can you possibly miss that event! All across the world, large scale concerts are held at to represent the G8 conference. Over 1000 musicians played simultaneously in ten different locations throughout the world namely England, Japan, United States, Rome and others.
And of course, Barrie. Of all cities, it was chosen to host this concert to represent Canada. The specific location was actually at Park Palace and a whooping amount of 35 thousand people turn out for the show. Ever since then, Barrie has risen to stardom and almost everyone in Canada knows the existence of this place.
A city of around 128,000, it is the 35th largest municipalities in Canada. The unusual thing about this city is that it is actually separated into two different parts. A great valley, which contains the downtown area along Kempenfelt Bay divides the city into the north and the south side.
Sir Robert Barrie, the general whose surname was cut and pasted on the directory of Canada. He was once in charge in Canada and had to portage from Lake Simcoe to Georgian Bay throughout the city. Thus, he was gaining popularity among the settlers then and his name was adapted since. Apart from this, Barrie also has a few unfortunate calamities that happened over the years. During a foggy night in September 1977, a Fokker had crashed into the CKVR Television tower. This has caused the disruption of CHAY FM and CKVR TV services as the 68 meters tower succumb to its death. No one on the plane survives. However, a new tower measuring up to 304 meters was built and the services were restored within a year. Perhaps at that height, any plane would be able to see its gigantic frame from afar.
In 1985, an F4 tornado ransacked through Barrie, leaving devastating damage across the whole area. Well constructed houses were leveled and those with weak foundations are blown away to some distance. What would you expect from a gigantic sized swirling of wind, sand and water which moves around 250 miles per hour?
The most recent news concerning Barrie was when the police raided the former Molson Brewery and guess what they found? The largest illegal growth of Cannabis was in operation.
However, Barrie still proudly stands today amidst these unfortunate events. For one, it had successfully held the live 8 concert in benefit of Canada. It has also inspired the “Art City” Project. Numerous large sculptures was situated across the city and placed at parks and waterfronts. It is also home to the MacLaren Art Centre, an art gallery that supports visual arts in the Simcoe County.
