Bruce Mines is a small town in Canada within Ontario, positioned on the north shore of Lake Huron, Algoma District with only a small population of 627 people. The town was pioneered in1846, as a copper mining settlement and gets its name from the late James Bruce, Governor General of Canada back in the 1800’s. By the late 1800’s due to constant disasters plaguing the miners, commercial activity shifted from mining to agricultural activities, though mining resumed again for a brief period from 1915 to 1921, but had since been dormant. These mines are today used as tourist attractions.
Historically this small town was the first ever copper mining town in all of North America. The shift from mining to agriculture and logging in the late 1800’s was successful as the town prospered despite the closure of the mines. The town of Bruce Mines was only officially incorporated in 1903. Forestry activities nowadays have declined, but agriculture, aggregate extraction and tourism have become the main income generation activities here.
