Burlington’s history began in 1798 as a small settlement of villagers. By 1874 the two communities of Wellington Square and Port Nelson were joined into the Village of Burlington, this was later revised into a township in 1915. By 1962, most of the township of Nelson was annexed including Aldershot. The town of Burlington became a city in 1974, on the establishment of the Regional Municipality of Halton. Although designated as a city, Burlington remains a suburb of Toronto. Burlington city has a population of 164,415, is situated in the Golden Horseshoe, on the opposite bank of Lake Ontario and Burlington Bay harbor. A city by the bay as words would have it.

This city is part of the Greater Toronto Area, although it is still part of the Hamilton Area. To get there you can use the Queen Elizabeth Way, Highway 403, Highway 407 as well as Dundas Street by car, and by railway there are also flights into the city via Toronto.

Burlington has been one of the fastest growing areas of Canada during recent years thanks to the advent of many new immigrants and young families building their homes here. From 1996 to 2001, the population of Burlington grew at a rate 10.1 %, a rate of growth some 4% higher than Ontario as a whole.  The population density of Burlington is around 812.2 people per square kilometer (2,104/sq mi). According to the mid-2001 census, the breakdown of the city’s population by gender was 48.4 % male and 51.6 % female.  The demographic is a mixture of expensive homes mostly by the lakeside while the rest of the communities are mostly upper-middle class suburbs. Crime rate is low and the City is one of the safest in Canada.

In terms of politics and legislature Burlington is represented in the Canadian House of Commons by Mike Wallace of the Conservatives as well as Garth Turner, Liberal. Burlington is also represented in the Ontario legislature by Joyce Savoline of the Progressive Conservatives and Ted Chudleigh of the Progressive Conservatives.

Burlington has been a twin city with Itabashi, a subsidiary of Tokyo, Japan from 1989.Various intercultural and economic exchanges and programs have been carried between the two cities and relations between them have flourished. Apeldoorn in the Netherlands is another twin city of Burlington. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA is a sister city of Burlington.

There are a number of great attractions to entice people to visit the city of Burlington. Amongst these are some of the more popular attractions including: Canada’s Largest Ribfest, Sound of Music Festival, Burlington Art Centre, and Spencer Smith Park. All of these attractions are located downtown within close proximity to the Spencer Smith Park making easier to take in all the attractions at once.
